Double or Quits>
It's a case of "Double Identity"
Now it can be told that Erle Stanley Gardner, creator of the world-famous Perry Mason, and A.A. Fair, creator of the top team of Bertha Cool and Donald Lam - are one and the same!
Sixty Million Readers Can't Be Wrong!
They've found the same exciting brand of mystery and action in every Gardner and Fair story.
DOUBLE OR QUITS is no exception. The case looks so innocent that Bertha goes fishing, but she heads back in a hurry when Donald comes up with a couple of corpses and a confidence game --- and then he himself becomes the fish that almost doesn't get away. It's Lam and Cool at their finest.
He picked up the phone...
"This is Donald Lam...
I've poisoned Mrs. Devarest...
I've poisoned Dr. Gelderfield's Father...
I've poisoned --- poisoned..."
And then he passed out.
The little detective was on the spot. He ws already suspected of one murder. And now he was forced to confess to two more. It was that kind of case...
It began quietly, with a hunt for a missing secretary and some stolen jewels...It got complicated fast, with blackmail, the old confidence game --- and murder...It got more interesting, with a rich divorcee and a lonely widow...And it reached a climax when Donald took a long drink from a bottle poisoned Scotch...
Donald Lam thinks fast and acts faster, because it's

The Case of the Grinning Gorilla>
"And so you paid five dollars for that package and you don't even know what's in it?" Della Street said in exasperation. "Why?"
"Well," Perry Mason answered, "the public administrator was holding an auction and no one bid on this package. So I started the bidding with five dollars, and the next thing I knew I ws stuck with it. It's marked: 'Private personal belongings, matter of Estate of Helen Cadmus.'"
"Wasn't she the girl who committed suicide by jumping from some millionaire's yacht?"
She was Benjamin Addick"s private secretary. The assumtion was that she jumped overboard. But as I remember it the body was never found."
The phone ran. Della Street listened for a moment and then said: "The Inquirer has heard about you buying the Cadmus diaries. They want to send a photographer and a reporter and do a human interest story."
"Tell them to come on up," Mason said. "I'll pose."
That should have been an end to it, but when Benjamin Addicks offered one thousand dollars for the five dollar package, Perry Mason really got interested. And then began perhaps the most bizarre case in his career which ended only when he was trapped by three killers -- two human and one a crazed and grinning gorilla!

Crows Can't Count>
EMERALDS ARE FOR EVIL
Shirley was sultry, sexy, smashing --- a sweet young thing to make a sugar daddy's mouth water. This luscious lass loved pretty baubles, so no wonder men showered her with jewels. But when a deluge of emeralds turned into a reign of terror, Shirley needed someone to bail her out.
That brought Bertha Cool and Donald Lam into the act, as the indomitable detective duo discovered that emeralds could be a girl's worst enemy when they carried a price tag of murder....
ERLE STANLEY GARDNER
under his own name, produced the immortal Perry Mason. Writing as A.A. Fair, Gardner created the matchless team of Bertha Cool and Donald Lam. Erle Stanley Gardner's books have sold over 150 million copies.
PLAYING WITH DYNAMITE
Sitting next to Shirley Bruce on her low-slung couch in the dimly lit living room, Donald Lam could understand why so many men had done so very many nice things for this girl.
Shirley took his hand in hers, and began playing with it. "They say you are very capable," she said.
"I'm glad you trust me," said Donald.
"I'd trust you for anything. I don't do things halfway. I'm a not a halfway girl."
Lam could believe her, but there was just one small hitch. The men that Shirley gave her all to, usually wound up all the way dead.....

The Case of the Hesitant Hostess>
"What's your price?"
Martha Lavina asked Perry Mason, crossing her knees and adjusting her skirt. "I haven't any." "All right, I'll put it this way. What's your client's price?"
"I don't think he has any."
"Don't be silly, Mr. Mason. There's a price for everything in the world. Now, what do you want?"
"An acquittal."
"Mr. Mason," she said, "let's not mince matters. When you get me back on the stand Monday morning, I'll crucify your client."
"So what do you suggest?" Mason asked.
Martha Lavina looked at him steadily. There was curiosity and a certain amount of admiration in them. There was no fear.
"Come back," she told him. "Any time."
PERRY MASON WAS LOSING!
The evidence against his client was pat and plentiful -- too pat and plentiful. But the witness, Mrs. Martha Lavina, was clever. She avoided every trap and her answers were convincing the jury that his client was guilty.
Mason believed Mrs. Lavina was lying and that he could prove it by bringing in a surprise witness, Inez Kaylor. Paul Drake supposedly had Inez stashed away in the law library of the courthouse.
Just before the session ended, Mason signaled Drake to bring in the witness. Drake slowly shook his head. Inez Kaylor had disappeared.
PERRY MASON
had been double-crossed!
