Buddhist Temple in the Mist
Poetry

Still gray sky
a cup of tea
to await the dawn

I surprise my self with what comes out in words as I attempt to write Haiku, Tanka and my own special style of poetry. I had asked other people who appear to be successful at writing poetry, how they write it. They told me they just do (like breathing I suppose) and write about what comes to mind. One Poet told me that he doesn't even need to re-write his work. Me not being so possessed by my writing; I have to spell check and make sure it makes sense. But as of recent, with practice and more of an idea of what I am doing, I can actually write poetry that makes sense or helps others relate to what I am thinking or experiencing at the time. My poetry are "snap shots" of thoughts, experiences and emotions of the moment they were written. And if I can do this you can too. So the purpose of this section is to share with you some of my poetry and also to share with you the "ability" and "confidence", that you can write something too. All it takes is a blank book and a few sharp pencils along with an eraser (a small hand size dictionary is helpful too!) - having the book near by during your day and writing down what happens that is meaningful to you. These poems for now do not have to be meaningful to anyone else; just you. But you would be surprised, that when others read your work, what will be said and shared with you about it. I really want to encourage you to write Haiku or any form of poetry you find you are able to relate to. Poetry is easier than writing stories or keeping a diary, because it is from the moment that you experience. We experience these "moments" all the time, no need to strain over what to write; when these moments are happening all around us. Like a cup of tea steaming, a sudden welcome breeze, a sparkle on the ocean, a tear, a rain; just write it down and it is amazing what happens as you pursue this over time. With my early attempts and most recent attempts at poetry; I also include here a resource section on how simple it is to write. Like using the "5syllable - 7syllable - 5syllable" form of Haiku; using this form without the fear of saying too much or too little in your poems. [Syllables are the beat counted in words, for example, the word "better" has 2 beats or "syllables" - (bet) (ter) = better. Another example is, the word "masquerade" has 3 beats or "syllables" - (mas) (que) (rade) = masquerade. A good dictionary can help you with each word and number of syllables counted if you are unsure at first, while writing your Haiku.] With the "Tanka" approach to writing poetry the line count is "5" Lines with "5syllables - 7syllables - 5syllables[this line is usually the pivotal thought that links the top part to the bottom part of the Tanka] - 7syllables - 7syllables[this line usually repeats the theme or is a summary of the 'two' thoughts given in the Tanka]. So simple and so powerful. Please just get a blank book or tablet and fill it with your own words; it is wonderful over time to see your own transformation as a person. I use both Haiku and the longer Tanka form to write down memories or mental "snap shots" of what I have seen, what has impressed me or about what I am thinking or feeling at the time. And remember it is not just a thing for women either - I think it is good therapy against the stress of everyday life. It turns our life into a Path to share with others. - the poetess

A Pink Lotus growing out of the deep mud of a Pond

grey of clouds
clinging to the edge of night
sorrows fading

Red bird
Flown in a dream
Message opened

Darkness
Trees topped by the Dawn
The chill awaits

a long the road
a brick house sheltering
the last autumn rose

dark water
Mother's face reflects the dawn
and the coming storm

beauty
seen with the eye
evades me now

Yellow leaves
Float over the water
Autumn beginning

Windows of bronze light
A single tomato leaf
Holds the evening sun

night's darkness
sightless visions
the dawn's light

at the wrought iron gate
standing
light of waning Moon

blush
pink mist hanging
low round tree

Black transparent gems
Velvet yellow wrap
Large bee at work

Friend in tabby coat
Soft, purrs, nips, tail and all
Missing Jay-Jay boy.

Look, see the tree tops
See beyond, Blue sky distant,
Emptiness beyond.

Shawl draped sleeping child.
On couch, but not alone.
A big black cricket watching.

wind at the window
screaming through the bushes
green dragon in flight

Sunrise golden light,
Sorrows Shared.
Precious life goes on.

Shared with dove coo, first light.
Space found, old memories
and finding again my grandfather.
Shadows of shovels shouldered,
Irrigation day bond with his grandchild.

Early sunlite dance,
waiting to read shared thoughts.
E-mail from a friend.

Squares of color,
joined as walls, empty door way.
Back stare a Brazilian child's eyes.

Jade hue sky around.
White curtains stained by evening light,
early summer storm.
Parked toy tractor, ready ride.
Blonde boy cries; no play with rain.

Curly girl in pink,
fiddler pant beetle stalks.
Mommy to Rescue?

Gnomes and Squirrels,
too heavy to run, far.
Hop a cab for better lawn.

Rain falling,
it's sound like a barrier
to the rest of the world.
I am glad I am at
peace within this storm.
For how deafening the
sound of falling rain would be,
to one lost within
one's darkened self?

Blue clouds
of rounded turquiose.
Dawn blushing against
this wall of gems.
Night of sickness over,
and my heart renewed,
in this fleeting splendid
light before a storm.
The cloud shapes diminish,
staining the morning light gray.
It will be good to be bathed by
the cleansing of rain,
with only memories to remain.

Happiness existing as a memory.
Happiness a treasure hidden in the next moment,
with these moments being so fleeting.
On the edge of a happy thought,
but how to enter and slip over to that side?
What is happiness?
What is it's source?
Maybe not things or places or people;
but only a memory; frozen in time,
tucked away in the life events of our past.
How do we get there, from here?
Where do we go, what can we do?
Just remember the last happy moment,
and wear it in your mind's eye.
Isn't happiness, but a thought away,
just around the bend in our mind?
Isn't happiness just waiting for us to catch-up,
with it on the road of time?
Oh, let us go there and bring others too.
Isn't it true that happiness is more,
than a feeling when it happens to you?
Let's just pretend to be happy,
and it may come true,
before there's a reason to not feel nothing or blue.
Do we have to have a reason to be happy,
and help others find happiness too?
Just smile, happiness will come back to you.

Black birds stacked in the trees, chattering.
Sounding like a group of people round a table,
packed with food.
Wonder how the cold and sunshine on this winter morn',
could produce the same effect.

Pearly clouds strung,
with the breeze.
In the powder blue,
sun blazing high.
Winter day jewels,
lighten my mind.

Small Boy squatting
over a dead frog
lying within a pine needle bed.

My Son announces, the frog is asleep
isn't it Mommy?
Is what he said.

Death finally recognized
within his next question.
Where is the frog at now Mommy?
Is what my Son asks, as he buries the dead.

Baby girl's soft kiss.
"MaMa I love you", she said.
Heals me, makes me new.

Fleet of foot
Curly hair bouncing
A child caught in flight.

Garden hose on
Children fill watering pot
Earth's mysteries.

Orange throated green bird.
Ewes studding jaded pastures.
Tasting fresh, past lives.

Watching tea brew.
Steam rising then gone like thoughts.
Consume the moments.

Observes the outcome,
oncoming wind of thoughts.
Exposed then lets go.

Fear of life,
dangerous as attachment.
Most destructive thought.

ants, people and clouds.
all made of the same thing.
fragments of the mind.

Early morning sun.
Invisible gray dawn.
There, not there, empty.

Red Buddha in the leaves.
Clay tiles seen through trees.
Which is reality?

Fog breath of pink clings.
Dry branches, awaiting tree awakes.
Not seen, anticipated.

Floating green.
Mist pasting leaves on trees.
First Spring rain.

Golden spider web.
Child up, first light to play.
Discovered beauty.

Brown Butterfly
in a child's eye
Freedom and love

Coiled up paper.
Trash under edge of couch.
Child's precious tiger.

Grocery list.
Steadied hand, wrote figures.
Poppy feeding kids.

Warm cookies arrive.
Wish granted off spatula.
Poppy's Wednesday's job.

Oatmeal pleaded for.
Grandchild ready for breakfast.
Surprise favorite.

Smile of a Child
Three cookies in hand
A gift for Mommy

Tara's presence.
Blue on silver lotus.
A worn turquoise ring.

Gods are emotions,
A worship of what is felt.
Thoughts to comfort ourselves with.

Night changing shadows.
Branch appearing on the wall.
Mind moving patterns.
Flowing from thought to thought.
Not having to be one way.

The Koinobo leading Back to the BeginningBack to the Beginning

Like the Buddha's struggle,
so is our life,
a meditation leading to enlightenment.

Focusing amid our daily lives,
a meditative dance.

Enlightenment assured by the Buddha's Path
and the many who have gone before us.

No more assured are beings,
of the recycles and suffering of this life,
who listen to the Dharma.

But rare is the chance of starting this Path
and rarer yet the being who will follow this Path
of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

Sitting cushion bound.
Enlightenment gliding by.
So simple, a thought.

Wind blown pages,
giving life to my words.
Note pad ready for thoughts.

Words unspoken, but heard.
Strange the sound of wind and words.
Pages curl on the white pad
in the unstable breeze.
The paper becoming textured with the dust
that falls unseen.

Words gaining substance and voice,
before even read aloud.
Words born,
before thoughts even used in other's minds,
because of this wind and dust.

Wind and dust and words and not much else left,
when writer and listeners are gone.

Thoughts spawned by these words
through the wind, the dust and the mind;
into the void.

Actions done and yet
has no home
on either side.

Ceiling fan
seen on, thought off
Breezes always there.

Dust on the floor,
comes and goes.
Where to where?

There are things
We say we are not
Karmic ripening

Creeping water's edge
Cat seated at what was edge
Hasn't a clue
Surprising phenomena
Nature of change can seem strange

Afternoon heat
Place in the shade, deep in thought
Cat jumps into lap

Pink blossoms
Catching a breeze
Wind chime in branches

Rainfalling
Measure by movement of leaves
Things we cannot see

Roses in the sky
Clouds pink and blue
Dawn's garden

religious powers
cover eyes and ears to cries
a god barred...

warm sun
shoes, gloves, spade - planter parked
young boy's new joy

Reflections
of others and their actions
only perceptions

Reflections
of others and their actions
love and no harm

Morning beams of light
hazy large room penetrate
passing thoughts still warm

green sea
waves lashed white
Dawn coming

tea warm and dark
essence transforms thoughts
healing taste

Spent in body
On cushion for answers
Divine Self opens

Many bright suns seen
Warmth on the face enjoyed
Past sorrows concealed

heart wanderings
roads of disappointments
Self examined
light breaking as new Dawn
heart brilliant stands as the ONE

feet so bare
rushing to Mother's breast
Wisdom's rescue

the small things
seen in their true light
do liberate

white tree twisted branches
bare reflecting sun
first warm day

smell of black tea
thoughts of Buddha and Teachers
no cup or pot found

Storm's approach
tree ravaged air borne flocks
only leaves

sky and water
sun and moon
reflections

an orchid by chance

"end of summer"

fallen trumpets
piled on the wet ground
beside the tall hedge

shaft of light
in the trees
a distant realm

this morning
walking upon
the glare of the sun

There are many more Internet Web Sites and many more books on the "How To" and "History" of Haiku and Tanka and related Japanese Poetry. Just search the Net, like Google.com for what makes sense to you and that you can easily use. Then start writing about what is important to you or just about the little things that would have otherwise gotten over-looked and forgotten. Look at what is happening around you; even the common things can be beautiful in a Haiku or Tanka. Any way if I see more links or books that become extremely useful and are "simple", then I will add them here for you. Hopefully my attempts at writing about my life will encourage you to do the same. I think about it this way, I can leave something behind for my children and friends and family ; beyond just family photos; I can leave something from myself in the poetry I have written. Thanks for reading and I hope you try your hand soon at poetry.

What then of Mount Tai-Shan?
From Chi to Lu the green never ends.
For here was formed the greatest beauty;
Here shade and sun separate dusk and dawn.
Layers of clouds rise from its craggy breast -
With effort one may see the soaring birds.
If I could only stand upon the highest peak,
And see in one glance how small the world!
